About the property

Inside

accommodation at Azalea is arranged over three floors.

The main entrance leads into a welcoming hallway corridor, off which the ground floor accommodation flows. Turning left, we first come to the well-equipped country-style kitchen with access to a shady terrace, and then a spaced open-plan room with a dining table to one end and a pair of sofas flanking a fireplace to the other. A wide sliding glass door brings in the sea views and allows the room to unite seamlessly with the shaded and sun-filled terraces to the front of the house.

The décor of the house fuses soft, warm colours - straw yellow and pale bronze walls and ochre terracotta flooring - and classic furniture and soft furnishings.

Heading back along the hallway corridor and past the main entrance, we come to the two ground floor bedrooms, both good-sized doubles with sea views and en-suite shower room. One opens out onto the main terrace, the other has its own private terrace.

Stairs in the hallway lead up to the first floor, which is given over to the main bedroom, a voluminous double with lofty wood-beamed ceilings, sea views, an en-suite shower room and a balcony overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Aegean.

Back in the hallway once more, stairs lead down to the lower ground floor, which is home to the remaining accommodation, comprising:
  • three double-twins with en-suite shower rooms. Two of these bedrooms have garden views, the third a window looking out onto a terrace.
  • a snug sitting area.
The staff's quarters are also on this level.

Outside

Azalea is surrounded by manicured, leafy gardens that are laid out in two distinct parts. The first is an extensive paved terrace to the front of the house. Immediately outside the living and dining room is a shaded area, comfortably furnished with sofas, easy chairs and a dining nook that's perfect for breakfasts, mid-morning coffees and light lunches. A few steps into the sunshine is a larger dining table for long star- and moonlit dinners. There's another sitting area, furnished with day beds, near the edge of this raised terrace, which also features a pair of shady trees and a border of bottle green hedging and vibrant bougainvillea. One of the two ground floor bedrooms also has direct access to this main terrace.

Steps lead down from one side of the main terrace to a stone-flagged path with floral borders that runs below the upper terrace. To one side of this path, an expanse of emerald lawn extends to wrap around the magical sea-view pool, whose watery pleasures are only half the story: thanks to the presence of a large pavilion with high vaulted ceilings, stone walls on three sides, built-in seating, and a fully-equipped bar, this is where you may well end up spending most of your taking hours.

Other areas of al fresco interest include the private terrace outside one of the ground floor bedrooms, the main bedroom's panoramic balcony, and a sheltered area of terrace to the rear of the property (accessed from the kitchen and the living area).

Flourishing climbers, whispering olive trees and giant, bushy oleanders wrap around the perimeter of the property, creating a cocoon of seclusion and privacy.

About the Area

Azalea sits on the south coast of Skiathos just a few minutes' walk from a secluded sandy beach. The island is known for the quality of its beaches, and there are many idyllic options nearby, including those of Paraskevi, Troulos and Koukounaries.

Skiathos Town, the island’s capital, is a bustling centre that’s well worth a visit or two. Its pretty, well-maintained maze of pedestrianised streets in the old centre offers a bit of something for everyone, including bars, tavernas, shops and, if you walk to the top of town, delightful views. Colourful flowering plants adorn white-washed walls and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Down near the port is the Papadiamantis House Museum, the former home of the island’s favourite son, the late 19th and early 20th century novelist and poet Alexandros Papadiamantis.

Blessed with numerous (over 50), well-organised sandy beaches bathed by transparent aquamarine waters, Skiathos is perfect for anyone who enjoys lounging by sea for days on end. In the summer months, the most popular beaches can get very busy but if you head to the more remote parts of the south and west coasts, it is possible to find plenty of space.

Sights worth seeing on Skiathos include the remains of the dramatically positioned castle. Sitting on the northern tip of the island, it was built to protect the populace of Skiathos in times of invasion and was a town in its own right, as demonstrated by the presence of three churches. The views are breathtaking, as are the dramatic cliffs that tumble into the sea. And if you’re hot after exploring the castle, you can head down to the beach below for a swim.

Considerations

Please note that there is a road running behind Azalea which is audible from the gardens and pool area, particularly during July and August.

Due to the nature of the property including terraces low walls and several drops around the grounds, children must be supervised at all times.

Our experience at Azalea was the best holiday we have had. Unbelievable service. Every detail thought out and perfection all around. The journey to the beach isn’t for the elderly or people who have difficulties, however for those who are able it’s brilliant.
